rough idle, only at cold

Hi guys,

I own a 2004 1.6l petrol beetle. for a while now I have had this issue and not even VW themselves can fix. From what I have researched and read I am thinking its a coolant temp sensor.

Basically its really odd. Car runs erratic idle revving up and down upon startup. Im talking up to 2000rpm at its highest point and as low as 300rpm (almost stalling) and when its doing it its blowing that much black smoke and burning fuel it is almost un-breathable in the garage.

The trick is..........it only does it when the COLD engine light is on..........as soon as the light goes out the car returns to normal tune.

From what I can gather, this has to to with the coolant temp sensor?

Its been into Hunter VW 4 times and they told me they dont know how to fix it lol. Im so over it, its that bad it can even drive through the brakes at times. when in drive or reverse.

Any help is much appreciated, hopefully someone else has experienced this.

Ive replaced MAF, oxy sensors, spark plugs, checked breather pipes etc.

Welcome Jarred. If you have access to a diagnostic tool, you can look at the output of the temperature sensor & how it talks to the ECU. It is common that they die with age, but personally I would like to see it diagnosed correctly firstly before throwing cash at parts that could be perfect.
