Smoke under bonnet on start up 08 Golf

Hi. I’m a newbie and seeking help for an issue on my Mother in laws 2008 Golf.
On a cold start up she saw lots of smoke coming from under bonnet. Switched off, Checked but nothing obvious. She called into local mechanic who took engine plastic cover off and saw a ‘ cap’ was off, replaced and sent her on her way.
Can anyone shed more light on what this cap is and possible explanation and what we should do now?
