VW wins "Battle of the Whine in Up!"

After six months of complaints letters ,phone calls,no replies to fone calls and emails I have to admit the JUGGERNAUT has won the battle of the Whine in my 2013 Up!. VW admit there is a Whine in my gearbox but keep insisting that it is a :characteristic of all Ups!!!!. I still cant believe a world car manufacturer can sell a car with an inbuilt whine in the transmission. Consumer Affairs in WA drove the car and admitted the noise was there but admitted there was not a lot they could do as the car was able to be driven and not break down !!! Transmission experts seemed to think it was was wrongly cut gears etc. and found it hard to believe the car was being sold with a fault like that. I am utterly sick of the rubbish I get from VW .Every email and letter has to be wrung out of them .God knows how much time and money has been wasted trying to get an answer to my problem. They advertise that " IF IT MATTERS TO YOU THEN IT REALLY MATTERS TO US"..... What a load of crap! Any way they won the war. I can't hack the stress any more. I'm going to try and minimise the whine with noise suppression matting etc but because of size of the car there aint much much room to fit anything in especially on the firewall. It's a great little city car if you can ignore the inherent noise coming from the gearbox/transmission. I am so disappointed in the brand. I expected so much from my first VW , but you know, s___t happens. Thank god for toyotas. Rigor42

Hoyhoy.

In all your mucking about with this noise did anyone suggest using different oil in the gearbox, I'm only thinking of this because of other cases where this has helped, e.g. the Polo 9n3 GTI has crunching problems when changing gears with the standard oil, different oil made them a lot better, just a thought. good luck.

After VW admitted there was a noise they changed the oil saying "this may fix the noise" but it made no difference.I insisted they put the normal back in which they did. They couldn't or wouldn't tell me what the different oil was, just that it was a VW part no. They seem to operate on the system that the less they tell you the sooner you'll go away.Anyway it worked I've gone away but boy am I spreading the word!!!

just as a final step, have you written everything down in chronological order?

If so, then might be worth going in to the dealer principal. Book an appointment, show him the list, then ask him what he would do in your situation..

Also have you driven another to compare the whine? We have one, it makes all sorts of noises you wouldn't hear in a GTI, but they seem OK. One other thing is drive a demo at the same dealership & point out the differences to the service manager (and document it)

Rigor, I empathise with you. Not that i have an Up. I had a similar issue in a new top of the range performance sedan and dealer claimed the whine was a characteristic of the model. Unlike VW the dealer replaced the centre diff three times under warranty, with varying outcomes. The whine remained. I stripped out the interior and laid additonal soundproofing. I sprayed underthe floor pan with a lot of sound deadener. Yes it made a difference. Techinicians noted that my car was better than others because of my work to audibly hide the Whine. Sadly I have to say I too took the issue to ACCC who basicaly said the dealer has done what they can and the car is safe to use, and there will be no futher progress with your complaint. ACCC useless.

My 2008 Polo Gti has a Whine which is more noticable in 1st & 2nd. I may have go for a Wavetrack or similar to fix it....
Cheers Al

Thanks Call Me Al....Haven,t posted or visited Ozvolks for ages re my Up! whine. I presume everyone knows by now that the Up1 Has been withdrawn from the Aussie market...Suppose that's one way of shutting the whingers Up!!!! Needless to say I still have a car with a whine and now no resale value. All I can do is keep spreading the WORD!!

Just adding to the up! hatred, my up! required a new clutch at 40k due to a faulty clutch pressure plate.

Due to this faulty pressure plate the syncros are totally stuffed on 1st and 2nd gear so its like driving a 1970's truck.

Quality.

Hoyhoy.

Not having a good run @ all. Things should be UP @ not down...:033102bad_1_prv:

Its really unfortunate, because the rest of the car is great, handles good, great interior, uses very little petrol etc, they just really cheapened out on the clutch/gearbox combo.
